eSIM for Kids and Families: Everything You Need to Know for Your Next Family Trip

Family travel brings joy, adventure — and an endless list of things to coordinate. Between passports, suitcases and plane snacks, keeping every family device online is one of the most practical challenges. How many eSIMs do you need? How do you share internet? Does it work on your kids’ phones? This guide answers it all.

Does Every Family Member Need Their Own eSIM?

Not necessarily. The hotspot feature (personal access point) lets a device with an eSIM share its connection with nearby devices over Wi-Fi. That means one eSIM with hotspot can provide internet to multiple family tablets, laptops and phones at the same time, without each one needing its own eSIM.

However, if each adult needs internet on their own phone independently (for example, to browse at the same time while one drives and the other looks up the restaurant), it makes sense to have one eSIM per device, or at least one per adult.

Are Kids’ Phones Compatible with eSIM?

Mid-to-high-range phones released since 2021 usually support eSIM. If your child’s phone is a third-generation iPhone SE, a Samsung Galaxy A53 or a similar model, it’s probably compatible. Check the EID in the phone’s Settings, as we explain in our compatibility guide.

The Most Efficient Family Strategy

For most families, the best strategy is for each adult to have their own active eSIM with hotspot enabled, and for the kids’ devices (tablets, handheld consoles, phones) to connect to the nearest adult’s hotspot. This simplifies management, lowers the total cost and guarantees there are always adults with independent internet.

Parental Controls and eSIM

If you decide to put an eSIM on your child’s device, remember that the eSIM only handles data connectivity — parental controls are set up in the device’s operating system (iOS Screen Time or Android Family Link), not on the eSIM. The eSIM has no content-filtering features of its own.

Can I Use an eSIM on My Kids’ iPad?

Recent generations of iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad mini support eSIM. If your iPad has a physical SIM slot or is a “Wi-Fi + Cellular” version, it probably supports eSIM too. Check under Settings → General → About → EID.

How Many Devices Can I Connect to the Hotspot at Once?

Most modern phones let you connect 5-10 devices to the hotspot simultaneously. That said, sharing the connection with many devices can reduce the speed available to each one. If several devices are streaming video at the same time, you may notice some slowdown.
