What Is a Fair Use Policy?

The fair use policy establishes that after you use a certain amount of data (generally between 1 GB and 5 GB, depending on the plan and the local carrier), your speed may drop from high speed (4G/LTE) to more basic speeds (3G or 2G). The connection isn’t cut off — it stays available for messaging, WhatsApp calls, and light browsing — but high-quality video streaming may be affected.

When Does Speed Throttling Kick In?

Throttling is triggered when the local carrier detects unusually high usage, or when you exceed the threshold set in the plan’s fair use policy. In practice, for a typical traveler using maps, social media, and messaging, it’s unlikely you’ll reach that threshold in a normal day of use.

Heavy usage that can get you to the threshold faster includes: high-resolution video streaming (Netflix, YouTube in 4K), long video calls, downloading movies or shows, or using the eSIM as a hotspot for multiple devices with heavy simultaneous use.
